Abstract
Arachidonic acid is known to have effect cell growth as controller ofacell proliferation and stimulator of platelet derived growth factor. We measured birth weight, placenta size at birth, and the arachidonic acid in umbilical blood to investigate the correlation among them. Twenty full-term well baby were included in this study and exclude neonate who had sepsis, IUGR, twin and/or others which may affect the level of arachidonic acid, birth weight and/or placenta size. We measured arachidonic acid level in umbilical blood at birth by Gas-Chromatographic /Mass-Spectro metry (GCMS). We analyzed the data by use of Correlation Pearson Coefficients. The correlation coefficients between birth weight and placenta size was 0.727, between birth weight and arachidonic acid was 0.440, and between placenta size and arachidonic acid was 0.407. The correlation between birth weight and placenta size was moderate. The correlation between birth weight and arachidonic acid and between placenta size and arachidonic acid were all weak but positively correlated. So we suggest that the arachidonic acid level of umbilical blood take effect the fetal growth and placenta growth.
